The pieces we get of Guertena’s life paint a very bitter and sad story, and coupled with the diary entry about imparting his spirit into his works, I feel that everything in this world reflects that sorrow, bitterness, and isolation.īut then there’s Mary. For those not interested, the short version is that I think the entirety of his painted world is basically a metaphor for depression. If you haven’t read the other essay I posted about what I think of Guertena himself, you should probably do that. So with this, hopefully we can get people to understand and appreciate some of the more positive and intricate aspects of her personality. Yes, she did a really bad thing, but there’s far more to her character than just that action, you know? Mary is fascinating in her complexity, and I think that’s something that’s too often overlooked. I think, given the events of certain endings, people have a really bad perception of Mary, which is kind of a shame. I think she’s the best character in this game.
